The Laburnum Dental Team

Laburnum Team

Jill Rank - Practice Manager

Jill has been at the practice for 15 years. She qualified as a dental nurse in 1993, since then she had gone on to achieve higher qualifications in Dental Practice Management and also completed the NVQ Assessors award (A2) which allows her to train the nurses within the practice.

She is passionate about her role as practice manager and is dedicated to providing a friendly and informative service for all our patients. Jill is totally committed to maintaining high standards of dental care at the practice and constantly strives to improve the quality of the patients experience from the moment they enter the practice to the time they have finished their appointment.

During the day Jill wears many hats and it is unusual to see her in one place for any length of time. Some of her many responsibilities include monitoring Health and Safety, staff management and training, liaising with the local health authority over a range of issues and overseeing the introduction of new technology into the practice.

Outside of work, Jill is married with two lovely children, Luke and Elysia. Jill enjoys spending time with her family and socialising with her large group of friends

Phil Forman - Practice Owner

Phil qualified at the Royal Dental Hospital in London in 1977 and moved up to Manchester to open Laburnum in 1979

Over the last 20 years, Phil has held various teaching posts based at the Manchester Dental Hospital and has been heavily involved in the training and development of newly qualified dentists during their vocational training year, both at Laburnum and other graduate training centres.

In 2003 Phil was awarded a further post graduate qualification following 3 years study in advanced general dentistry. With special interesting cosmetic dentistry and periodontology (treatment of the gums), Phil is perfectly positioned to provide the highest standard of care available.

In his free time Phil loves spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoys keeping fit so you might see him jogging through Handforth or Wilmslow at the weekends. Watch out though seeing Phil in a pair of shorts can be a shock. (Those of a nervous disposition should look away)

The thing Phil loves most about dentistry is the way one has to combine academic and practical skills. The introduction of new technology and advances in the science of dentistry, always introduce new challenges and the need to develop new skills.

Most importantly Phil believes that delivering the latest developments in dentistry to his patients allows them to receive the best that dentistry can offer.

Dr Ian Charlesworth BDS - Dentist

Ian graduated from Manchester Dental School in 1996.

Priding himself on the quality of service he provides, he is respected amongst his professional colleagues and the local community as having a genuine love of dentistry. Patients often comment on the relaxed atmosphere Ian and his nurse create.

Ian has attended many post graduate courses in dentistry and is able to apply his extensive knowledge to enable his patients to receive treatment in a stress free environment feeling confident they will experience no discomfort.

Working closely with local laboratories, Ian produces high quality work, ranging from full mouth smile makeovers to the construction of single replacement crowns and veneers. Ian also has gained valuable experience in facial aesthetic medicine including the use of dermal fillers (Restylane and Perlane) and Botox.

Using the latest techniques, Ian also accepts root canal therapy (endodontic) referrals from other colleagues in the Manchester area. He has a special interest in this field and is the only dentist in our locality who can undertake root canal therapy using microscopic techniques.

When not at work Ian loves spending time with his young family at home.

Dr Jane Cherry B.Ch.D - Dentist

Jane enjoys all aspects of dentistry and is especially interested in facial aesthetics having attended courses on dermal fillers and the use of Botulinum Toxin Type A.

Jane also has a great interest in cosmetic dentistry and loves to improve patient’s smiles with crowns and veneers.

Kim Hill - Dental Nurse

After leaving school i decided Beauty Therapy sounded like the perfect job for me. I enrolled at Macclesfield College and qualified as an NVQ trained beautician 2 years later. It didn't take me long to find work in the form of a Clarins beautician in Hoopers, Wilmslow. I stayed there for about 2 years before realising it wasn't for me, i needed something a little more in depth with the potential to further my career in the years ahead.

It was at this time that a training position became available at Laburnum. That was 5 years ago now, and after completing my NVQ in oral health 3 years ago, i have continued to enjoy my time here as a qualified dental nurse. I have had the opportunity to develop my skills and feel very much an important and relied upon member of the team. My main role is to assist Dr. Charlesworth in the day to day running of the surgery - this involves many complicated endodontic cases, in which the patients have been referred, to benefit from his experience and skills in this specialised area. I have found my skills in this area developing more and more and feel my experience and knowledge in this field enables Dr Charlesworth to work much more effectively with myself by his side.

Out of work i have a lovely home life, having just got married to my wonderful husband Matthew. We have been very busy refurbishing our entire home and have just about finished, which is perfect timing for the arrival of our new baby - due in March 2010. I can't wait to start my family life, but this means i will be sadly leaving Laburnum in February to pursue my new role of mummy! I will, however, hopefully be returning late 2010 to a more relaxed role of part time nursing.

Holly Lasch - Dental Nurse

Having left Wilmslow High school in 1997 after completing my GCSE’s Holly has enjoyed working ever since.

Having previously worked in the I.T. industry, Holly fancied the challenge of a complete change of career. Her mother has enjoyed being a dental nurse for many years and has been a great source of encouragement to me.

In 2006 she became a trainee dental nurse at Laburnum. After 18 months of hard work she passed her dental nursing exams in May 2007. An expert in putting nervous patients at ease and building confidence through positive experiences about how modern dentistry can improve their oral health and facial appearance.

Holly loves spending time with her family and has most fun on their annual skiing trip. She also loves Friday night Indian takeaway!!

Rebecca Sherlock - Dental Nurse

After working in cabin crew for Monarch Airlines, Becky decided it was time to keep her feet on the ground for a while.

After applying for a job at Laburnum she soon found herself behind the reception desk welcoming patients and booking appointments. Having completed a NVQ in Dental Nursing, she now enjoys working in the surgeries as a qualified dental nurse.

With a love getting to know all the patients and helping to make Laburnum a friendly place where patients can feel as relaxed as possible.

At the weekends you can find her helping out in her parents pub in Strines, near Marple

Kate Widdowson - Dental Nurse

I have moved from Doncaster (South Yorkshire) almost a year ago now and have just settled into my new life here in Cheshire. After working as a hairdresser for 3 years, I decided to take a new challenge and a different career, so I applied for a job as a trainee dental nurse, it was then in April (09) that I applied for a position at Laburnum.

I have enjoyed every aspect of the job, I feel that each member at Laburnum have been fantastic, they have made me feel part of the team, and have been helpful throughout my experience, from being in the surgeries and being on reception. It has been the best career move by far, and I have found the job very rewarding and interesting. I enjoy meeting old/new patients and hope that their experience coming to Laburnum has been as good as mine!

I am currently studying my ΝVQ in dental nursing, as well as gaining the knowledge and skills in the surgeries with the dentists. I am working hard and revising for my dental nursing exam which takes place in December (09) I am looking forward to completing my NVQ and being a qualified dental nurse!

At weekends, I am usually travelling back to Doncaster to visit family and friends. After over a year of waiting patiently for my lovely boyfriend Leon to finally move from Doncaster, we are now currently looking for a house, and looking forward to the future here!

Kara Shaw - Dental Nurse

Since leaving school Kara studied for a year at college achieving her NVQ level 1 in Hairdressing after deciding to leave the classroom and start work she completed her second year working full time and completing her level 2 NVQ. After 2years of working in the Hairdressing industry she decided it was time for a change. Trying out office work and 9-5 desk jobs Kara decided it wasn’t for her and that working with the public and learning new skills was more appealing.

It was at this point when a position became available for a Trainee Dental Nurse at Laburnum. Having only been here a short while she’s found it a lovely place to work and has no trouble of finding help and support from other members of staff whilst on her training. Kara can’t wait to start her course and get stuck into the work!

In her spare time Kara likes to socialise with friends and spending time with the family.

Janet Latham-Berry - Hygienist

Janet qualified as a dental hygienist from Guys Hospital in London in 1978 and achieved her Cert Ed in Health Education from Manchester in1982.

Janet subsequently gained valuable experience whilst working in the children’s department at the dental hospital in Manchester.

As a dental therapist Janet is fully qualified to provide fillings for both children and adults. Janet especially enjoys motivating patients to help them treat their own gum disease through oral health education. To see the change in a person who may have had stained teeth, bleeding gums and bad breath into someone who becomes more confident in themselves is very rewarding.

If you are concerned about your breath (halitosis) then please feel free to ask your dentist to refer you to Janet for an expert opinion.
